Babyface is aiming to bring trendy New York decadence to the youth of Guangzhou and the rest of China. The club’s design is reminiscent of a Timberlake video, and pretend hard men look menacingly at you before reserving your table and disappearing for 10 minutes, but there’s a lively and unthreatening atmosphere, attracting a good-looking, youthful crowd. The slick DJ pumps out a banging mix of mid-nineties rave and killer break beats, confusing much of the dance floor who seem happy to dance to anything. At the bar, cocktails are crafted and surprisingly affordable, with the Black Russian (RMB40) being highly recommended. If you fancy yourself as voguish urbanite, or just fancy yourself, this is for you.
